Winter Farm Production

Did you know that cows and chickens produce at different rates in different seasons? This can make milk and egg production challenging!

Producing the best milk and eggs possible is an art, a science, and a constant dance with nature to keep our animals healthy. Part of raising healthy animals who produce nutritious eggs and raw milk means working with their natural cycles in our Utah climate with its dark, cold winters.

Cows and chickens naturally produce less milk and fewer eggs in the winter due to less sunlight and colder temperatures because the animals’ bodies direct more energy toward keeping warm. This means less energy for production.

While this has caused shortages in the past, we’ve increased our herd and flock sizes recently to provide more milk and eggs to our customers throughout the year!

So how do we care for our animals during the winter and still provide great milk and eggs?

We support our animals’ health during this time by supplementing feed to make sure they get enough nutrients and providing heat lamps for our chickens. This ensures that our milk is as high-quality as ever! It’s still full of healthy fats and protein, along with heat-sensitive vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and helpful bacteria that may make A2 raw milk easier to digest. Our eggs are always chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids, bioavailable protein, and plenty of vitamins and minerals—even during the darkest parts of the winter.

While we provide the best feed and veterinary care possible, our animals still live outside most of the time, when they don’t choose to hang out in their shelters. We don’t do anything to unnaturally stimulate production, like force-feed them, give them hormones, or include artificial ingredients in their food.

Their bodies need a break during the winter. Our animals work hard to provide good food, so we let them take a bit of a break during the winter as nature intended. We don’t compromise when it comes to our animals’ health!

That being said, we are working on completing our fodder machine, which will allow us to grow fresh, green grass for our cows year-round, indoors, using relatively little water. This will support our cows’ health and keep the flavor of our milk more consistent.

This is part of working with nature and not against it.

It comes down to this: our cows aren’t faucets, and our chickens aren’t egg factories. We can’t just turn production on and off at will.

At the end of the day, it’s healthy animals over milk and egg quantity. Always. That’s the only way to produce quality, nutrient-dense food year-round. We do what we do because we care about our animals and our customers, and we believe that this is the best way to prioritize both!

We’re excited to continue to provide the most nutrient-dense eggs and A2 raw milk out there. Thank you for making us part of your journey!
